Katie Pritchard completed a four-year, high school soccer all-state sweep, as the Waynesville High School girls’ soccer standout was named to the Missouri Class 2 All-State Team for her senior, 2008 campaign.
The all-state team, selected by the Missouri Soccer Coaches Association, was released on Monday. Pritchard was selected to the all-state second team as a forward.
It is the fourth consecutive year that Pritchard has been selected to the Class 2 All-State Team.
“It’s been exciting, being all-state four years,” Pritchard said. “I’m happy to have had my teammates and my coaches push me.”
This season she became the all-time leading career goal scorer in Missouri Class 2 girls’ soccer history, finishing her Lady Tiger career with 171 goals. This past spring Pritchard netted 38 goals to lead the Southwest Missouri Region.
“It’s a great achievement, to be a four-time all-state soccer player, especially during her senior year being all-state in two sports,” WHS head coach Josh Scott said of Pritchett, who also won all-state honors as a basketball player and who will attend Drury University next school year on a basketball scholarship. “Her numbers were real amazing this year…she led the region in scoring and we had, what I feel, was one of the toughest schedules in the area.”
The Lady Tigers set new standards this season, finishing with a program-best 17-5 record and winning the Ozark Conference championship for the second straight season. However, WHS was upset by host Lebanon in the semifinals of the district tournament, and that made Pritchard’s record-setting senior season bittersweet.
“I wanted to go far as a team,” Pritchard said. “But we accomplished some good things. We had a good team and I’m still happy.”
Scott said Pritchard became more of a team leader as a senior. “She was capable of putting her team on her shoulders a little more this year,” Scott said. “She was a little more selfish around the box this year, which was a good thing for us. That’s what we needed from her.”
Pritchard’s competitive soccer career is, for the most part, over now as she has already moved to Springfield to take classes and participate in the off-season conditioning program with the Drury women’s basketball squad.
“I’m sure once soccer season comes around I’m going to miss it,” Pritchard said. “But I’m happy about playing basketball.”
“I’m not sure disappointed is the right word,” Scott said of Pritchard not playing soccer at the college level. “As long as Katie is happy. But I think some college coaches have missed out. Some soccer program is far worse off, and Katie will be just fine.”
