In front of the entire student body the Waynesville High School girls’ basketball team got its first conference win and got back to .500 with a 57-43 victory over Joplin on Friday afternoon at the WHS gym.
“We kind of looked like we did in Neosho,” said Tigers head coach Brittany Matlock. “We shared the ball as a team and hopefully we can just keep going with that and not take any steps back.”
After falling behind initially, Waynesville then took off and Joplin did everything possible to keep up with the running Tigers as both teams shot very well in the first quarter, with Waynesville getting the edge 18-15 after one.
The Tigers ran away with the second quarter, jumping out to an 8-0 run and then never looking back as they cruised into halftime leading 34-22.
Defense was the key in the second half as Waynesville could only manage 23 points in the half while Joplin scored just 22, but that was more then enough for the Lady Tigers.
In other action the junior varsity won their game 38-27 and the freshman also won 46-9.
Waynesville will have a busy week coming up as they will travel to Springfield Glendale on Monday, followed a road game at Marshfield on Tuesday before returning home to host Rolla next Thursday.
