The Waynesville High School boys’ track team had one of its best-ever team finishes while freshman Ekate Lymon of the Lady Tigers became a state champion during action over the weekend at the Missouri Class 4 Track and Field Championships.
The Class 4 and Class 3 meets were held Friday and Saturday at Dwight Reed Stadium on the campus of Lincoln University.
The WHS boys finished fourth as a team.
Raytown South won the boys’ Class 4 team crown with 76 points followed by Hazelwood East second with 55 points, Hazelwood Central third with 43 and Waynesville fourth with 34.5.
The Waynesville boys captured 10 all-state honors in six different events.
Senior Sam Scott highlighted the action for the WHS boys, as he gained all-state in all four of his events. He was third in the open 200-meter dash with a time of :21.81 and fourth in the 400-meter dash at :48.99.
He also ran the anchor leg on the 4x200-meter relay team – which also included senior T.R. Raines, junior B.J. Ray and sophomore Miakel Williams – and placed third with a time of 1:28.23.
The Tiger 4x400-meter relay team, consisting of senior Lucas Bateman, Raines, Ray and Scott, placed eighth with a time of 3:21.18.
WHS had a pair of all-staters in both hurdle events.
In the 110-meter hurdles junior Solomon Williams was third with a time of :14.46 while Bateman was eighth at :15.02.
In the 300-meter hurdles Bateman repeated his third-place performance of a year ago with a time of :38.47 while S. Williams was seventh at :40.91.
Sophomore Tim Williams tied for fourth in the high jump competition for WHS on Friday with a leap of 6-2. And Ray finished eighth in the 400-meter dash with a time of :50.86.
The top eight finishers in each event won all-state laurels.
Also for the WHS boys S. Williams was ninth in the triple jump at 44-7 1/4 and senior Albert Sostre was 16th in the 800-meter run at 2:29.14.
Lymon Stars
Lymon was one of the sprinting stars in Class 4, winning the girls’ 100-meter dash and placing second in the 200-meter dash.
The freshman speedster won in the 100 with a time of :12.61. She had a time of :25.63 in the 200 to take second place, trailing only state champion
Olivia Lewis of Gateway, who had a winning time of :24.55.
Also for the Lady Tigers sophomore Roxanne Koke competed in the shot put on Friday. Koke made it to the final round, but missed an all-state placement by just one inch, finishing ninth at 38-9.
As a team the Lady Tigers tied for 13th with 18 points.
