LAQUEY— The Laquey Lady Hornets opened the 2009/ 2010 basketball season with a bang Tuesday night, beating Climax Springs 61-40. The Lady Hornets (1-0) led the whole way, kick-starting their big victory by outscoring the Cougars 18-2 in the first quarter and rolling from there.

5-6 senior guard Emily Murray scored 20 points, including four three-pointers, while 5-11 junior forward Tyler Brock finished with 18 points and four rebounds.

Head coach Eric Shaw liked what he saw from the team, despite 14 turnovers and sloppy fourth quarter play when the game was already in hand.

“We’ll need to curb some of those turnovers,” he said. “When we play throughout the season other teams we play are going to take advantage of that.”

The Lady Hornets are the No. 2 seed in the Frisco League Tournament and won’t play again until Monday. They’ll play No. 7 seed Licking at 6:30 p.m.
