The Newburg High School girls’ basketball team split a pair of games Monday and Tuesday.
On Tuesday the Lady Wolves dropped a non-conference game to St. Elizabeth 58-52. And on Monday Newburg posted a 81-54 Frisco League victory at Stoutland.
The Lady Wolves now have a 3-11 record. Newburg is scheduled to play again Monday at Laquey in Frisco League play, with junior varsity action starting at 6 p.m.
Tuesday
St. Elizabeth 58, Newburg 52
St. Elizabeth held a slim lead over the Lady Wolves most of the way. Newburg trailed 17-15 after the first period and 33-29 at halftime. St. Elizabeth outscored Newburg 16-8 in the third period to take a 49-37 edge into the fourth quarter.
Senior guard Hannah Yelton erupted for 33 points to pace Newburg while freshman forward Kelsey Austin added 17 points and 11 rebounds and sophomore forward Shelby Friend seven boards.
Monday
Newburg 81, Stoutland 54
Yelton had another big scoring night, firing in 39 points, to power Newburg.
The game was tied at 14 after the first period but the Lady Wolves put things away by outscoring the Stoutland Lady Tigers 29-10 in the second quarter. It was 64-38 entering the final period.
Senior guard Rena Richardson added 16 points for Newburg while Austin had 10 points and 11 boards and Friend seven rebounds.
