LAQUEY— The Laquey Hornet soccer team ended its regular season on a positive note Tuesday, beating the Iberia Rangers 8-3 in front of a packed crowd at a cool, muddy and wet home soccer pitch at Laquey.
Laquey jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Iberia got on the board in the early stages of the second half.
The Hornets controlled the game throughout, outshooting Iberia 20-6.
Iberia played a hard and solid game, but apparently were no match for the Hornets on their senior night.
The game began with all nine seniors meeting at the center of the pitch for the pregame coin toss as captains; all nine played the entire first half of the game in front of their family and friends.
The departing Laquey senior boys are Matt Brown, Ryan Johnson, Gus Klemp, Shawn Botti, Warren Shetler, Dylan Warren, Robert Snyder, Daniel Meade and Vincent Wilcox.
“These boys had a great four years of high school soccer and will be greatly missed by all,” Laquey head coach Will Coyne said. “They have represented the their school and community in a very positive manner, and should be commend for their contributions.”
Klemp finished with a hat trick, scoring three goals, while Tyler Smith scored two goals and Vincent Wilcox and Chris Wilson each chipped in with a goal a piece.
“Overall, it was a solid victory,” Coyne said. “I am truly proud of our kids and the way that they have handled adversity this season.”
The Laquey squad will spend the rest of this week preparing for their Class 1 District 6 tournament matchup against Richland this Saturday in Springfield.
The game is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at Catholic High School in Springfield.
