There have been no changes in the practice time of the Waynesville High School boys’ soccer team despite the red-hot weather.
And because of that head coach Mike Armstrong has had to alter what the Tigers are getting done on the field in the sizzling heat.
Since Monday the Tigers have practiced in mid-afternoon at Anderson Field. Armstrong said the Tigers are holding up well.
“It has been a challenge,” he said. “We can’t do any competitive running. We’re focusing on all technical stuff right now.”
Armstrong has had 47 players in grades 9-12 in camp. He was set to cut the roster to 36 today.
The Tigers are coming off a solid, 13-8-2 campaign. However, WHS graduated 11 players from that squad.
Coming back are three starters -- senior forward/midfielder Kevin Johnson, junior forward Karl Dupont and senior midfielder/defender Gehrig Haberstock.
Armstrong says this year’s Tiger squad will have to control the pace of the game.
“I think we will be strong at possessing the ball,” he said. “I think we’ll play at a more patient and conservative style.
“I feel we’re strong up top. Scoring-wise I think Johnson, Dupont and (Camoy) Elash are guys who can look strong there. Defense is probably where we’ve got to spend a lot of time focusing.”
In goal the Tigers have two returning junior varsity keepers in sophomore Lajos Zadravecz and junior Nick Munoz battling for the varsity job.
“It’s a good battle,” Armstrong said. “Both have their strengths and weaknesses. They’ll probably battle it out all year long. Both are varsity-caliber goalies.”
Waynesville is scheduled to open its season at Sullivan on Aug. 27.
TIGER NOTES: The Tigers are scheduled to hold a varsity vs. junior varsity scrimmage from 3:30-5 p.m. Friday at Anderson Field.
There are three special nights that Tiger fans should be preparing for during the upcoming season. On Sept. 14 it will be Senior Night vs. West Plains at Anderson Field, which will be the WHS varsity team’s first home game of the season. On Sept. 21 it will be Family Night vs. Lebanon on Anderson Field and on Oct. 1 it will be Youth Night vs. Republic at Slaughter Field.
